Due to the recent heavy rainfall and the rising water level, the June 20 2nd Annual Lake Apopka Cleanup has been postponed!

From Mike Brinkley on 6/5/09:
Unfortunately, we are going to have to postpone the Lake Apopka Clean Up scheduled for June 20, 2009 to a future time to be determined. High water levels (thanks to the no-name storm system that sat over us for several days) have made the trash nearly impossible to find and with the rain we’ve been getting daily, water levels show no signs of receding by the 20th. Thank you for your continued support and I will update you once we have another date.

Lake Apopka Bird Survey - schedule change - conducted quarterly

Greetings Avid Birders,

In the past, we have conducted the Lake Apopka Bird Survey on the first Saturday of each month. Beginning in October 2008, we will be conducting the survey quarterly, rather than monthly. As a result, I wanted to send you the survey dates for the upcoming twelve months. The Lake Apopka Bird Survey will be held on the following dates:
October 4, 2008
January 3, 2009
April 4, 2009
July 11, 2009
(conducted on the second Saturday due to the fourth of July holiday)

If you are interested in joining us, please note these dates on your calendar. As I have in the past, I’ll continue to send out survey announcements prior to the survey date.
My very special thanks go to each of you who have been so actively involved in the survey. Your efforts have been beneficial in allowing us to collect excellent bird data on the property. I truly appreciate all of the work that you have done on the project and I cannot thank you enough for your help. I hope you’ll continue to join us on the quarterly surveys.

TUESDAY MORNING RESIDENTIAL HORTICULTURE CLINIC

We are happy to inform you of the Tuesday morning residential horticulture clinics at the Mid-Florida Research & Education Center (MREC).

Please stop by with your plant problem or soil for testing between the hours of 9:00 am and 12:00 noon. Here are some suggestions that will help you bring the best sample:
man examining plant 1. Please bring about a pint of soil for testing taken from the surface to six inches deep.
2. Plant samples should be representative of the problem and where possible include several leaves or even a whole branch.
3. We are also happy to look at bugs, which are best transported in a bottle.
4. Sod for examination should include a square foot of turf two inches thick cut from the border of a good and bad area.
During clinic hours a University of Florida trained Master Gardener will respond to your concerns. Otherwise the results will be sent promptly in the mail. The center is located at the MREC, 2725 Binion Rd., Apopka, FL 32703  See http://ocextension.ifas.ufl.edu/res_hort/res_hort_plc.html for more information, or see map to MREC.
